Strategic Media, Community, and Legislators Engagement for advocacy on diabetes and other NCDs

Objectives

To roll out large-scale multi-country advocacy and awareness initiatives on NCDs through differentiated engagements with stakeholders.

Approach

The project is an extension to the WDF17-1494 that successfully strengthened the capacity of NCD alliances and rolled out multiple advocacy activities. This second phase aims to expand on gains and maintain and refine the successes, resources, and tools through:

1. Capacity building of media professionals to cover diabetes and other NCDs and effectively inform the public and decision-makers; the reach of media professionals to encompass remote areas.
2. Convening of national-level multi-stakeholder advocacy workshops and community outreaches.
3. Mobilization of the education sector in advocacy through outreaches and capacity building of teachers and students, and engagement of ministries of education.
4. NCD advocacy coverage to be expanded across the cultural sector via capacity building of arts and culture professionals, and engagement of strategically selected arts and culture institutions.
5. Focus on advocacy at the regional level through policy-level advocacy meetings with the East Africa Community (EAC), with the development of a policy report, and establishment of EAC targets on NCD prevention.

Expected results

• 7 regional high-level advocacy meetings with policymakers, 6 policy briefs and 1 policy report developed.
• At least 240 media professionals trained, 280 arts and culture professionals equipped, and 66 stakeholder mobilisation meetings held.
• 60 media appearances, 180 articles published, 15 videos and 30 infographics produced.
• 3,000,000 views, a 44% increase in media coverage on NCDs.
• 450 teachers and 9,000 students trained, 780 people screened for NCD.
