Combattre le diabète et ses complications au Togo

Objectives

To implement a first phase national level diabetes/NCD response in Togo with focus on complications and data management in 31 districts incl. to strengthen civil society association.

Approach

This project will finalise the development of a diabetes data collection system, pilot it in one health region and hereafter roll it out in four additional health regions encompassing 31 districts.

The project will work to strengthen civil society and the capacity of health workers, doctors, nurses and community health workers at all health care levels on type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), diabetic foot (DF) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the targeted 31 districts – some of which were strengthened during a previous project.

The project will furthermore provide relevant medical equipment for the detection of DF, DR and other complications of diabetes in the targeted districts and support capacity building of civil society organisations who will hereafter raise awareness related to diabetes in remote corners of Togo.

In order to ensure peer support and continuous learning for people living with diabetes, the project will support the creation of diabetes clubs which will serve for sharing experiences and peer support.

To ensure efficacy and long-term sustainability, all the main health stakeholders in Togo will be involved from the start of the project: Ministry of Health, National and Regional Health Directorates, National, Regional hospitals and health structures and relevant professional medical societies.

This project will be implemented through

Roll-out of data reporting system via initial piloting in one health region, hereafter national roll-out.
Training of HCPs incl. selected members of CSOs on use of register.
Capacity building on diabetes incl. complication management and roll-out of improved care inc. screening
Training of HCPs in targeted care sites on diabetes management incl. diabetic retinopathy and foot complications and referral for care.
Education of nurses at primary level on diabetes foot complications.
Procurement of eye, foot and basic diabetes equipment incl. distribution at district, regional and central level.
Training of paediatric HCPs in management of type 1 diabetes incl. learning visit to Mali.
Strengthening of CHWs and CSOs on diabetes incl. complications and roll-out of national awareness campaign.

Expected results

The data collection system is validated and HCPs are trained in its use
Reporting of data is effective
2,100 people are screened for diabetes
10 referral ophthalmologists and 36 ophthalmology doctors and technicians in 4 regions trained in DR
118 HCPs trained in T2DM, DR and DF
