To contribute to the development and implementation of national strategies and policies to fight diabetes and NCDs.To strengthen access to care for diabetic patients at 13 regional hospitals, 55 medical centres with surgical units through equipment and capacity building of staff and structures specific to diabetes care and related NCDs.To improve care for children and young people living with Type 1 diabetes.To raise awareness and conduct screening for type 2 diabetes.To detect and provide care for hyperglycaemia in pregnancy in two pilot health centres in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso.
This project will be implemented through:Conducting awareness-raising, informational and screening activities for the populationContribution to the development, finalisation and implementation of national policies and strategies fighting diabetes and other related NCDsImproving the treatment and care of type 1 diabetesConsolidating the skills of healthcare professionals (UH, RH, MCSU), association members and CSOs regarding type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, hyperglycaemia in pregnancy, diabetic foot and therapeutic diabetes education.Equipping tertiary, secondary level hospitals and advanced primary level clinics located across Burkina Faso.Ensuring that at least 8,500 patients have access to improved diabetes care, a figure expected to reach 12,500 during the project.Strengthening the skills of associations and civil society organisations (CSOs) working with diabetes and related complications.
• 546 doctors and 570 nurses trained in type 2 diabetes care and prevention.• 85 doctors and 85 nurses trained in gestational diabetes (GDM).• 82 doctors trained in type 1 diabetes care.• 80 diabetes clinics established and strengthened (5 University Hospitals, 9 Regional Hospitals and 66 primary HFs).• Diabetes registry established with 14725 patients on the register.• 378 pregnant women screened for GDM and 127 diagnosed recorded on GDM registry (pilot study from 2 HFs).• 271 children with type 1 diabetes on registry.
