Improving national capacity for diabetes in pregnancy, Ivory Coast

Objectives

This project aims to develop screening and management of gestational diabetes in Ivory Coast and contribute to the reduction of maternal, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality related to gestational diabetes.

Objectives:

To develop protocols, guidelines and registers for the diagnosis and treatment of gestational diabetes.
To provide equipment and rehabilitation for 110 gestational diabetes support units.
To strengthen the capacity of health workers, doctors, gynaecologists, paediatricians, dieticians, midwives, nurses and nursery nurses, in particular in the diagnosis and management of GD and its monitoring.
To screen and conduct awareness about diabetes during pregnancy of 20,000 persons, particularly vulnerable populations and women of childbearing age.
To screen and provide care for pregnant women via perinatal consultation (CPN), including postpartum care of new-born children of diabetic mothers.

Approach

This project will be implemented through:

Establishing hyperglycaemia during pregnancy protocols on selected sites
Training health workers
Equipping diabetes care units and targeting maternity equipment
Training dietician assistants in nutritional management
Conducting awareness and screening and care for pregnant women and their new-borns, incl. the general population.

Results at completion

- 1 Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) management protocol established.
- 1 electronic registry for GDM set up.
- 110 maternity units equipped to screen and treat GDM.
- 150 medical staff and 267 paramedical staff trained to diagnose and manage GDM.
- 1 university thesis written (in French) on GDM during the project period.
