Capacity development for combating NCDs among Rohingya population, Bangladesh

Objectives

To strengthen the capacity of the existing health care providers (Primary level: at the camp; secondary and tertiary level: at the respective premises).

To identify local and Rohingya volunteers for community mobilization in terms of identifcation and prevention of major NCDs among the Rohingya population.

To sensitize the stakeholders, opinion leaders and policy makers through advocacy campaigns regarding major NCD prevention and management during crisis period.

To equip selected organizations assisting in the screening of the Rohingya population for major NCDs and in particular screen all pregnant women for hyperglycaemia in pregnancy.

To develop educational materials for creating awareness among the Rohingya population regarding NCD risk factors and its prevention.

To develop a referral system for proper management of diabetes, hyperglycaemia in pregnancy and cardiovascular disease.

Approach

This project will be implemented through

Training of human resources (educational and hands-on training)
Supply of the NCD screening tools
Adaptation of guidelines, development of training manuals and promotional materials
Selection of local and Rohingya volunteers and orientation
Advocacy meetings to sensitize the opinion leaders and policy makers regarding prevetion and management of major NCDs during crisis period and avaliability of treatment facilities including medicines
Equipping existing organizations for screening of major NCDs
Referring clients identified as hypertensive, diabetic, malnourished (overweight/underweight) to the next chain of referral centre
Conducting awareness campaigns through distribution of posters and booklets among Rohingya populations with the help of local, Rohingya volunteers regarding NCD risk factors and its prevention

Results at completion

• 431 health care providers trained for identification, management and prevention of NCDs
• 103 local and Rohingya volunteers trained for identification, prevention of major NCDs of Rohingya populations
• 12,750 adult Rohingyas of 30 years and above screened for diabetes and also for hypertension; nutritional assessment by measuring height, weight and calculating BMI
• 1,632 of the adult Rohingya populations with positive screening for type 2 diabetes will be tested for confirmation by OGTT
• 3,435 pregnant women screened for hyperglycaemia in pregnancy
• 200 stakeholders of different organizations, policy makers and opinion leaders engaged in awareness raising of NCDs and GDM
• 18,000 posters, 30,000 leaflets/booklets will be distributed to create awareness about NCD risk factors and its prevention
• 110 glucometers and 160 BP machines, 110 weight and height scales, 110 measuring tapes and other consumables will be distributed
