Improving Diabetes Mellitus Diagnosis and Management in Luanda, Angola

Objectives

To support the development and implementation of a national diabetes and NCD programme in Angola through a pilot stage intervention

Approach

Based on lessons learnt from project WDF14-873, which also was implemented by CUAMM together with the Angola Ministry of Health (MoH), MoH Angola will now take a further step towards a national diabetes/NCD response, again supported by CUAMM who has been partnering with the MoH in different health and development areas for more than twenty years.

The project will focus on capacity building within diabetes detection and care at carefully selected health facilities and hospitals across Luanda, Angola’s capital city and one of the largest and fastest growing urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa.

Diabetes/NCD protocols and guidelines will be improved and refined, doctors and nurses will be trained and basic equipment provided. Awareness raising and health promotion activities will also be rolled out within targeted urban communities.

To ensure proper data collection and to sustain an evidence-based approach, patient registries will be improved and expanded to encompass diabetes/NCD related indicators, whereby the pilot stage intervention can be thoroughly measured and assessed before a subsequent expansion is considered.

Results at completion

6 health facilities strengthened to provide diabetes care services
114 health care professionals trained
14,120 people at risk of diabetes to be screened
515 cases of diabetes detected and provided care
