Prevention and care of diabetes prioritising diabetic foot care, West Bengal, India

Objectives

The aim of this project is to prevent diabetes and improve access to care of diabetes and diabetic foot care among the indigenous people of the Birbhum district in West Bengal.

Approach

The project is designed in alignment with the health policy and programmes of the government of West Bengal. The project aims to bridge the gap between the health facilities available at the block level and district hospitals and the actual needs of the indigenous people in the underserved rural areas.

The project will create awareness among the indigenous people about diabetes and diabetic foot care, and promote a healthy lifestyle. People with high risk of diabetes will be screened for diabetes incl. foot complications and provided counselling on the management of diabetes and healthy lifestyle, including referral to government hospitals if needed. The capacity of 3 diabetes clinics will be built by providing training for health care professionals and equipment.
