Improving Gestational Diabetes in Tonga

Objectives

To introduce comprehensive and nationwide pregnancy and diabetes care in Tonga.

Approach

This project aims to enhance care for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Tonga. The project includes preparing and revising guidelines for GDM screening and treatment, developing a national database for diabetes in pregnancy, and aligning with existing e-health programmes. Comprehensive training is provided to healthcare professionals. Screening protocols for GDM are being implemented, and multi-disciplinary diabetes in pregnancy services are established at key healthcare facilities. Community engagement is fostered through awareness campaigns. Ongoing monitoring and data analysis ensure project progress and allow for health system integration in alignment with the new FIGO guidelines customised to the local context by the Ministry of Health's GDM Taskforce.

Results at completion

- New gestational diabetes training material and treatment guidelines developed
- At least 59 doctors and 156 nurses trained in gestational diabetes screening and care
- 7 hospitals and clinics provided capacity to screen for and treat gestational diabetes
- At least 4,000 pregnant women screened for GDM and diagnosed cases provided care
- Gestational diabetes now fully integrated into the health system planning of Tonga MoH
