The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Brazil is on the rise and it is estimated that 6.2% of Brazil’s adult population, 9.1 million people, have been diagnosed with diabetes. This is a huge challenge, considering the high prevalence, severe complications and high costs of the disease for the public health care system. With emphasis on capacity building at primary care level, the project will implement diabetes care services in 79 units in the state of Bahia, leading to improved diabetes care for 7,000 people in a total of 90 units of Bahia, Brazil.
The overall objective is to support integral health care policies for people with diabetes in the State of Bahia, Brazil. This will contribute to improving the quality of care provided by the primary health care system, including actions to strengthen components related to health promotion, preventive health care, and self-health care. This project is an expansion of the original 2009 WDF supported PROCED project, which covered 11 municipalities, and by adding 79 new units (mostly urban/suburban), diabetes care is implemented in a total of 90 units in Bahia State.Through replication and refinement of the 2009 capacity building approach, the outcome of the PROCED project is expanded and consolidated in this project.Capacity building takes places in the targeted primary units through a comprehensive and differentiated training with focus on foot care and eye care, and with the help of new equipment as well as strengthening of patient registries. Importantly, the municipal authorities are also sensitised. The project has a special focus on diabetic retinopathy screening, referral and care, with a retinal camera and a laser machine will be provided to targeted primary units.
