- Develop a program delivery model for diabetes prevention and related capacity building in the Indian state of Kerala that can be “scaled up” to all of India in the future; - Achieve significant improvements in those behavioural risk factors – including alcohol consumption, use of tobacco, physical activity and diet – that have already been demonstrated to reduce diabetes progression and incidence in previously conducted efficacy trials.
The project will refine and further expand an existing successful community-based programme that promotes behaviour change in individuals at high risk of developing diabetes in Kerala to three new geographically distinct and culturally diverse regions of Kerala. The activities outlined are:Refinement of the programme based on one-year results from a cluster randomized controlled clinical trial demonstrating evidence of programme effectiveness. Further fine-tuning of programme according to ongoing follow-up data.Training of trainers (ToTs) from KSM in building capacity of peer educators in project delivery, lifestyle change strategies and interventions as well as tools for monitoring behaviour change.ToTs to train peer leaders from each targeted region to build the capacity for the future project delivery and monitoring.Delivery of monthly small group lifestyle change sessions through existing KSM structures to equip high risk individuals and families with knowledge and skills for behaviour change.Ongoing monitoring and final evaluation of implementation for quality assurance, improvement and future scale up; also applying KAP studies and key behavioural / clinical outcome indicators.
