Diabetes prevalence for the MENA region was 10.9% in 2013 with 34.6 million people living with diabetes. The estimated increase in the number of cases between 2013 and 2035 is a staggering 96% - bringing the total to 67.9 million people. Over the past three decades major social, economic changes and rapid urbanisation in the region has significantly contributed to an increase in risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) that also lead to diabetes.Especially in Palestinian refugee camps, NCDs - particularly diabetes and hypertension - are the main causes of death. According to UNRWA the rate is estimated to be 70%.This project is a continuation of the Diabetes Comprehensive Care Model (DCCM), which was established as a result of the collaboration from World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), DanChurchAid (DCA) and Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH) for improving diabetes care and prevention in Gaza and West Bank.Training of health care professionals to provide quality diabetes care in the region of West Bank and Gaza.
The aim is to involve more clinics to adopt the DCCM approach and hence make the achievements from the previous project (WDF09-442) sustainable. AVH will train 96 health care professionals (HCPs) in diabetes care and prevention.The training curriculum was developed by Steno Diabetes Centre and a team of six external Steno professionals, specialized in nutrition, diabetes, foot care, endocrinology, physical education and psycho-sociology will be responsible for conducting the training. It will consist of case discussions, scientific presentations, and practical advices as well. During the course, the participants will experience life as patients with diabetes in order to better understand their challenges. This experience will be presented and discussed with the other participants and their peers.AVH - High Impact Intervention Team (HIIT) will participate as trainees together with MoH, UNRWA and relevant NGOs staff. The trainees will bring real life cases from their clinical settings for discussion and evaluation of current procedures. All participants will be part of the “Training of Trainers” (ToT) principle and programme. A pre and post assessment survey will be conducted as a tool to access the benefits of the training.
