The Kenya Ministry of Health has a National Eye Care Strategy Plan that aims to eliminate avoidable blindness in Kenya by 2020 by educating healthcare professionals and the general population in three intervention regions about diabetic retinopathy.
A mobile screening camp will visit each region once a year and will offer low cost care to low-income diabetic patients. The screening camps provide an opportunity to establish a patient database, which will allow for better follow up and monitoring of patients. In addition to the screening camps, “health talks” will be held for the local community to further raise awareness.
