National micro-clinic and training project, Jordan

Objectives

Doctors and nurses in Jordan lack basic knowledge about diabetes, which is becoming an increasingly growing problem. This project will introduce a sustainable strategy for preventing diabetes, which builds upon the Global Micro Clinic pilot project (WDF07-231), which prevented diabetes-related complications among communities living in poverty in Jordan.

Approach

The approach of the Global Micro Clinic is innovative and sustainable in that it uses community-owned solutions to promote positive, healthy behaviors to combat diabetes. Doctors and nurses are first educated to close the gap in diabetes knowledge so that they can recruit and train diabetes patients to form Micro Clinics, a small group of patients that come together to better manage their diabetes. Each Micro Clinic will be provided with a glucose monitor and a start-up kit. Nurses will facilitate the meetings until the members can sustain their own Micro Clinics.

Results at completion

• 185 nurses trained
• 96 doctors trained
• More than 2.5 million people reached through awareness and outreach activities
• 1,014 micro clinics established
