Strenghtening diabetes care, Madagascar

Approach

The basic health care providers in Madagascar do not screen for diabetes. Thus, awareness is low and people go undiagnosed and untreated until more serious complications such as diabetic foot or retinopathy arise.

This project will change this by creating awareness through primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention interventions. The Madagascan Association Malgache contre le Diabète will implement this project by strengthening educational and medical activities, training healthcare professionals, and strengthening the quality of care at diabetes clinics. Six clinics will be upgraded and eight new clinics will be established.

Results at completion

• 781 doctors trained
• 667 nurses/paramedics trained
• 126 diabetes instructors trained
• 6 diabetes clinics strengthened
• 7 diabetes clinics established
• 84,219 people screened
• 191,112 people counselled
• 280,116 people reached with prevention messages
