Learnings and insights from the successful Colombian gestational diabetes project are online and available for download.

A pregnant woman enrolled in the Vida Nueva project in Barranquilla City, Colombia.
In 2010, the World Diabetes Foundation and the District of Barranquilla, Colombia, together with other partners including Novo Nordisk A/S, embarked on an ambitious project: Improving detection and treatment of GDM and reducing the future risk of diabetes in mothers and their offspring in Barranquilla City.
Vida Nueva worked with the government to:
• mandate GDM treatment guidelines for all public providers (a first in Colombia)
• raise awareness among pregnant women
• build the capacity of health workers and increase quality of care
• improve patient support for Barranquilla's most vulnerable population
It drew praise early – already in 2013, the project was recognised nationally for its work in diabetes and particularly gestational diabetes. Now, after the project’s completion in 2014, its key achievements and learnings have been collected in a case study report sponsored by Novo Nordisk. The case study and other useful materials in English and Spanish are now published online to inspire others.
Find the case study report a short film and more on the WDF website.
