Poverty-related diseases constitute a humanitarian challenge in the developing countries. The EAGLES Health Programme seeks to strengthen European responses to the global challenge posed by major diseases in the developing world.
European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) is an initiative supported by the European Commission that seeks to enhance the collaboration between European researchers and researchers in the developing world in order to fight hunger and disease.
As part of the EAGLES Health Programme, a diabetes symposium is to be held at BioVision in Alexandria, Egypt in April 2006.
Approach
The diabetes symposium will be organised by EAGLES in association with the World Diabetes Foundation and BioVision Alexandria. A Symposium Committee will draw up a programme to run over three days as part of the BioVision Alexandria 2006.
The 3-days programme includes presentations illustrating the diabetes situation in the developing countries, workshops and preparation of a strategy for helping health authorities to combat diabetes in the developing countries.
The input from the conference will be used as part of an EAGLES report on diabetes in the developing world. The diabetes report will be available for health authorities in developing countries, the European Commission, European development organisations as well as non-governmental organisations and this way help increase awareness on the burden of diabetes in developing countries.
