The aim of the project is to create awareness about diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, screen the population for diabetes and to provide appropriate referral and treatment of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in two regions in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

108,000 people screened for diabetes
5,000 people with diabetic retinopathy will receive laser treatment
400 general practitioners and medical specialists will be trained in detection and diagnosis of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
Results at project completion
107,989 patients have been diagnosed/treated in 647 diabetic retinopathy camps in Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. 28,877 cases of diabetes were found and 5,612 (19,43%) cases of diabetic retinopathy were found.
37,586 patients have been diagnosed/treated in 150 mobile van camps in Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Madurai. 6,772 cases of diabetes were found and 1,462 (21,5%) cases of diabetic retinopathy were found.
10,672 laser treatments have been carried out in tertiary care centres in Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.
19 seminars for at total of 687 doctors have been conducted in Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. 28 seminars have been held for paramedical staff.
Posters, booklets, and pamphlets have been distributed at hospitals and to staff and patients. Six press meetings and 36 diabetes fairs and exhibitions have been conducted.
