UN Resolution on NCD's

In May 2009, The NCD Alliance launched the successful campaign for a United Nations General Assembly Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

The UN Resolution calling for the Summit was unanimously passed by UN member states on 13th May, 2010. The final resolution will be be available shortly on the United Nations website (http://www.un.org/ga/64/resolutions.shtml)

The NCD Summit will raise the profile of NCDs on the global stage, mobilize the international community to take action, secure the commitment of Heads of State to lead the cross-government effort necessary to reverse the epidemic, and send a clear message to donors and funders. The HIV/AIDS Special Session held in 2001 resulted in a Heads of State Declaration of Commitment that paved the way for an urgent international response. It also led to the creation of the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, which has raised nearly US $10 billion in development funding for low- and middle-income countries (LMCs).

Next Steps:

Extensive consultations will be required to define the key asks of the NCD community and ensure that the meeting produces concrete outcomes. Further research will be required in order to estimate the costs of the national interventions needed to successfully address NCDs in LMCs. It will also be critical to ensure that NCD interventions contribute to health systems strengthening within a horizontal rather than a vertical funding approach.
