Walk and learn

If you are near a park, wood, hillside, or even a quiet part of town, why not take the kids out in small groups for a lesson "on the move"? You can learn about nature, geography, history, the environment, and so on....

Preparation:

  • Map the route
  • Consider safety issues – follow the rules at your school.
  • Arrange transport if necessary.
  • Prepare talk about the things to see along the wayalong the track. Perhaps there is a local "expert" that could act as a guide.
  • Consider letting the children collect leaves, nuts, and other objects for projects when they return to the school. (Remember to bring plastic bags etc.)
  • You may like to have lunch while you are out. Suggest "healthy" lunches, snacks and drinks, avoid fast food, ice cream, soft drinks and sweets.
  • Think about the weather!
  • Register your walk on the Global Diabetes Walk website; www.globaldiabeteswalk.net

On the day:

  • Remind everyone why we are doing the Global Diabetes Walk
  • Explain about diabetes and how to lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Remember that you are not alone - thousands of others around the world will be walking with you!
  • Dont forget to update the website with your results.

  • Have fun!
