During the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, a large portion of the health care system was destroyed and staff were killed or exiled, leaving the country with a severe lack of qualified doctors, nurses and para medicals.
The Rwanda Diabetes Association (RDA) has established a specialised diabetes clinic in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. However, the rest of the country remains largely lacking qualified diabetes care.
Objective
The project seeks to improve diabetes care through training of 24 para medicals on diabetes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Approach
In recognition of an urgent need for trained health care personnel in the field of diabetes, RDA has taken the initiative to organise and conduct a 5-day training session for 24 health care staff in Rwanda. Two health care staff from each of the 12 regions of Rwanda will be represented.
The training focuses on diagnostics, treatment, complications and prevention and will be conducted in collaboration with two doctors working at the existing diabetes clinic in Kigali. The French Diabetes Association will assist RDA with provision of expertise.
The 24 staffs trained are expected to cascade their new knowledge to other health care personnel in their own regions.
Expected impact
- 24 health care staff trained
- Improvement of diabetes care throughout the country
