Objective

The project seeks to train health care personnel on diabetes care and strengthen patient groups and diabetes associations.

Expected impact

• 100 health care providers trained
• Standards of care, diagnosis, referral and prevention of complications improved
• Support and dialogue groups for patients and their relatives enabled
• Strengthened capacity of patients for lobbying for rights

Results to date as of July 2006

• 5 day training courses were held for doctors and nurses in the management of diabetes, in the first year 153 people have been trained
• A survey carried out in one commune in Bamako identifying 380 people with diabetes
• The elaboration of training, education and information toolkit for support group initiated
