The World Diabetes Foundation is dedicated to supporting the prevention and treatment of diabetes in the developing world through the funding of sustainable projects
The World Diabetes Foundation has funded 138 projects to date focusing on diabetes awareness, education and capacity building at local, regional and global levels.
The Foundation creates partnerships and acts as a catalyst to help others do more. It strives to educate and advocate globally in an effort to create awareness, care and relief to those impacted by diabetes.
The current project portfolio is USD 125.7 million of which USD 42.6 million were donated by the World Diabetes Foundation. Assuming that all projects have the intended impact, the projects may potentially influence diabetes awareness and treatment of 63 million people directly.
The establishment of the World Diabetes Foundation was announced by Novo Nordisk A/S on World Diabetes Day 2001. A donation by the founder of approx. USD 80 million was approved by the General Assembly in March 2002.
In March 2008, the shareholders of Novo Nordisk A/S approved an additional endowment of 575 million Danish Kroner (DKK) and extended the original funding period by five years i.e. up to 2017; this coming over the original grant of 500 million DKK brings the total endowment from Novo Nordisk A/S to 1.075 billion DKK equivalent to approximately USD 222 million, at current exchange rates, to be disbursed over 15 years.
The World Diabetes Foundation is registered in Denmark as a legally independent trust. A small secretariat takes care of day to day business on behalf of the Board of Directors.
