Clinics for Care

1,812 clinics established
17,787 doctors trained
15,243 nurses trained
35,515 paramedics trained
259,509 patients treated in general diabetes clinics

No other common non-communicable diseases has as many ramifications and issues to deal with as diabetes. Building health promotion programmes targeting diabetes prevention has salutary effects on the risk of obesity, hypertension, cancer, stroke, heart diseases - the other common non-communicable diseases. Similarly, a model outpatient clinic that provides diabetes screening and care services can also be used to provide services for hypertension, obesity and heart diseases. The setting up of such clinics is not expensive.

The clinics supported by the World Diabetes Foundation are run by our partners, and are most often housed in an existing hospital building. In this Newsletter, we showcase how innovative partners have built mobile clinics and brought advanced care into rural areas. We shall visit some examples of diabetes care on wheels in India. Finally, a project in Jordan has established micro-clinics which consist of patients who receive training at the local health centre – and subsequently meet monthly in their own homes in small groups to follow up how they are faring with their care.

Whether clinics are in a hospital building, in a van or in a private home, the long-term objective for WDF is the same: finding functional, sustainable and meaningful solutions to create and improve access to care. Our support for these clinics helps supplement existing health care systems and sometimes provide innovative solutions for improving capacity that will hopefully continue to function after the World Diabetes Foundation’s support ends.

In the Academic Corner we give an insight into the Foundation’s support to diabetes clinics in conversations with two managers from the Foundation. They talk about need-based support and sustainable principles for funding.
