Results to date
Protocols for out-patient management have been developed for and adjusted to a Malawian setting, based on the recommendations set by IDF.
Two nurses have been trained to become diabetes nurses. They underwent training at the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology (CDE) in Johannesburg. Both nurses work one day a week in the diabetes clinic, and they teach patients and student nurses.
An HbA1c-machine has been procured for the clinic.
More than 1,000 diabetes patients have been registered at the clinic and are now benefitting from the improved diabetes services.
61 medical students and 120 nursing students have attended the diabetes clinic for training.
A Global Diabetes Walk was conducted on World Diabetes Day. It was attended by diabetes patients, friends, relatives and staff and covered by the newspapers and TV.
