Global Diabetes Walk Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon. 400 persons, including 100 children with type 1 diabetes from the Chronic Care Center (CCC) participated in the Global Diabetes Walk headed by former First Lady, Mona Hrawi. The participants gathered, distributed educational material, and then walked 30 minutes before they arrived at the conference room of Our Lady of Lebanon Harissa beautifully lit in blue.

The chief Priest Father Khalil Alouen welcomed everyone; then Ms Mona Hrawi from CCC gave a speech; nutritionist and Walk coordinator Samia Khoury gave a lecture about diabetes diet and lifestyle for preventing and treating diabetes; and finally, an endocrinologist gave a lecture about new technologies in type 1 diabetes like insulin pump, pancreas transplant etc.

A drawing competition was put up for the children, and their drawings were very creative and all related to diabetes, insulin and pancreas.

Glucometers, diet plans and foot therapy were made available, the latter to prevent amputation, as it brings back blood circulation to the small arteries of foot. Coupons were distributed for people to come back the following day fasting to do free blood tests (glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, sgpt, sgot, and osteoporosis).

Overall, the WDD celebration was a succes and awareness was great with coverage on tv and in newspapers.
