The film was kindly sponsored by Novo Nordisk US.

Objectives

The project aims to support 25 disadvantaged children and youth living with type 1 diabetes.

The children visit the diabetes centre on a monthly basis. In addition to medical examinations and HBA1c check-ups, during the visits they receive advice on self-management and glycaemic control. One-day camps and regular meetings are arranged during school holidays in order to enable the parents and children to meet and socialise with peers.

The cost of helping in Kenya

For less than 2 USD a day you can support a child with diabetes in Kenya. This covers the full cost of strips, insulin and syringes, lancets, hba1c check-ups, home visits and attendance at the bi-annual 1-day get-togethers. The annual cost per child is estimated to be 440 USD.

Expected effect

The selected children will maintain good control of their sugars leading to higher quality of life and better possibilities for achievement of their personal goals. Scare family resources otherwise diverted to hospitalisation or to buying insulin can thus be directed to other needs. This improves the economic welfare of the whole family and particularly the relationship to siblings who can otherwise feel deprived because of the resources going towards the child living with type 1 diabetes.

The fundraiser is linked to the WDF-sponsored project WDF04-085 under which 42 diabetes clinics and 200 mini-clinics are established in all district hospitals and public health centres and 500 doctors, 1,000 para-medicals, 3040 nurses, 250 dieticians and 2,500 lay educators will be trained on diabetes prevention, management, control and risk factors.

The children will work closely with the IDF Youth Ambassador to raise awareness on diabetes among their peers. The Ministry of Health has a full-time focal person in most provinces to coordinate diabetes awareness activities and monitor the established clinics.
