In San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, the Rosales Hospital is the main hospital of referral for the whole country and treats a large group of patients with a range of serious complications caused by their diabetes.
Due to the lack of availability of diabetes care and services in the public sector, the national diabetes association ASADI (Asociación Salvadoreña de Diabéticos) is vital for providing diabetes services, particularly within diabetes education and provision of subsidised or free medicines.
ASADI is the diabetes association in El Salvador. The organisation was started 16 years ago and cover 7 regions of El Salvador, which is around half on the countries regions.
Two of the board members of ASADI work at the diabetes clinic at Rosales and accordingly, there is a close cooperation between the hospital and the association.
The diabetes team is very dedicated and highly motivated, but their task is enormous and the lack of basic equipment and educational materials complicates the situation.
The money donated to people with diabetes in El Salvaldor will be used for projects at Rosales hospital and donated via ASADI.
