Fundraising will have a great impact in Vietnam

A successful attempt to raise money for a single diabetes clinic in Vietnam now enables two of Vietnams districts to participate in a WDF funded national diabetes project aiming to improve the quality of diabetes care in Vietnam.

During s fundraising at a bazaar at Novo Nordisk, a pharmaceutical company dedicated to diabetes care, employees raised DKK 70,000 for Vietnam.

This was in 2003.

Since then another fundraising initiative has been launched to support the efforts of improving diabetes care in Vietnam. A cookbook with healthy recipes has been written, published and sold within Novo Nordisk, raising an additional amount of at least DKK 440.000 (approximately USD 74,000).

The Take Action Cookbook, sold at a low price of DKK 50 DKK (USD 9) will have a huge impact on diabetes prevention and treatment in Vietnam.

By March 2005 employees have bought around 9,300 books at the price of DKK 50. All of the funds raised will go directly to the World Diabetes Foundation's "National Diabetes Project".

Fundraising widens the WDF impact in Vietnam

Initially the project was applied in two demonstration provinces, involving 20 districts, 400 commune centres and a population of around 1 million people. At the project start it was considered replicating the model throughout Vietnam, if the project proved to be successful.

Now, thanks to a massive fundraising, another two districts are about to be included in the efforts to diagnose and treat diabetes in Vietnam.

Objectives of the national diabetes project in Vietnam

The project aims to improve the quality of diabetes care in Vietnam through a community approach to prevention, control and management of diabetes.

The project has the following main objectives:

  • Raise awareness of diabetes at community level
  • Improve clinical knowledge and skills among medical staff involved in diabetes treatment
  • Educate people with diabetes in self-management
  • Find new cases of diabetes
  • Set up a diabetes association at national and local level
