Objective

The objective of the project is to develop and implement a community-based approach to diabetes care and prevention in the Ramallah District.

Expected impact

  • 125 health care professionals trained
  • 1,000 pregnant women benefiting from improved antenatal care
  • Approximately 2,000 patients benefiting from improvements in diabetes care and screening
  • An estimated number of 10,000 people reached through awareness activities

Results to date

  • Protocols on GDM and hypertensive disorders in pregnant women are being piloted in 25 level clinics in the Ramallah District and have now been endorsed by PMoH. 30 health professionals from these clinics have been trained in management of gestational diabetes (GDM) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). 2,150 community members reached with increased awareness on GDM and HDP.
  • Community-based diabetic care and protocols are being piloted in 9 rural clinics in the Ramallah District. 40 health staff has been trained in diabetes care and management, as well as in the use of Behavioural Change and Communication materials (BCC materials). 568 persons with diabetes from 8 villages have been registered and provided with BCC materials and improved diabetes care. Additionally, 600 community members have been reached through awareness.
  • Model specialised clinics have been established in the communities of Beit Leqia and Shouqba (Ramallah District), including equipment. The diabetes team (nurses, diabetologists, dieticians, lab technicians, foot nurse and junior doctors) has been trained to provide comprehensive diabetes care. To date, 428 patients have been registered and assessed in the two clinics.
  • Community awareness, support groups and gym classes are being facilitated for men and women by Juzoor.
