Dr Jose Carlos Iramendi Gil, Diabetologist organised a walk to create awareness about diabetes in children and adolescents, the theme for World Diabetes Day 2007.

Together with this team he organised an 8 km Walk in the mountains in order to be able to understand the difficulty of access to care for adolescents in remote and rural areas of Brazil.  Dr Jose Carlos walked the very same route, patients must endure every time they require treatment or blood glucose monitoring. One of his patients lives in the mountains, in a rickety house, isolated in the mountain forest, 8 km away from the health centre, 30 km from the local town centre, 60 km from the specialist centre in Fortaleza. The 8 km road is a dirt track passing through the mountain forest of Jubaia, a rural area in the local authority of Maranguape, Ceará.
