Facts about diabetes in Tanzania
- 300,000-350,000 of Tanzania’s 32 million people have diabetes. It is estimated that for each diagnosed patient, another two or three go un-diagnosed.
- With only six diabetologists in Tanzania, diabetes treatment also takes place at the general practitioner's level.
- The Tanzania Diabetes Association is now able to cover all regions of Tanzania with clinics funded by employees of Novo Nordisk through fundraising activities, the World Diabetes Foundation, Novo Nordisk World Partner Program and Vienna Diabetes Association.
- The clinics offer consultations free of charge. Medicines (insulin, oral hypoglycaemic agents and other oral medications) and laboratory tests will be provided at subsidised costs. For those who cannot afford these services, provision has been made for free supplies.
