Insulin availability

The network for primary diabetes care in Kinshasa, D.R.C. has been functioning without interruption since 1974.

At present, however, the situation regarding availability of insulin and oral diabetes medication is severe, leaving many insulin requiring people with diabetes in a difficult position. This situation is due to a prolonged period of war in the country.

This project seeks to address this emergency situation.

Objective

The project aims to address an emergency situation by providing insulin and oral diabetes medication to the diabetes centre in Kinshasa.

Approach

Insulin and oral diabetes medication will be purchased locally and distributed to people with diabetes through the established network for primary diabetes care, run by Sister De Clerck.

Expected impact

  • It is possible to support 800 people with insulin for 1 year. If oral diabetes medication is included this number could be multiplied by a factor 2.5
