The total number of people with diabetes in China is currently estimated to be in excess of 30 million and continuing to grow.
The diabetes prevalence rate in the People's Republic of China is lower than that of Chinese in Hong Kong and Singapore. In these areas prevalence rates range between 9 - 12% of the adult population.
In view of the rapid modernisation and urbanisation taking place in the People's Republic of China it is expected and feared that prevalence rates may reach the levels of Chinese living outside of mainland China.
Presently, China's overall diabetes detection and treatment capacity is limited. There is a severe shortage of medical staff qualified in diabetes.
Objective
The project aims to improve the capacity to prevent, detect and treat diabetes and reduce the burden of diabetes on the Chinese society.
Approach
Project activities will cover an area with a population of around 500 million people, including 20 million people with diabetes within a 5-year period.
It is the aim to create a diabetes care system which is useful and responsive to patient needs. It is hoped that a comprehensive diabetes care environment will attract the participation of all stakeholders.
The project focuses on the following 3 main components:
- Development of a national diabetes prevention and treatment guideline
- Creation and establishment of diabetes management systems in hospitals
- Creation and establishment of diabetes management support systems in community health centres
These components aim to introduce systematic diabetes education for doctors and nurses. 50,000 doctors and nurses will be trained in diabetes care and management through seminars and on the job training. Focus is also on raising public awareness of diabetes and improving patient self-management skills.
Expected impact
- 500 million people with access to effective and affordable diabetes care through the establishment of a network of diabetes centres at existing hospitals and community health centres
- 8,000 doctors and nurses will benefit directly through training and on-the-job practice
- Due to training and awareness raising, diagnosis is expected to increase by 2,5 million new cases per year
- Long term reduction in diabetes prevalence and diabetes related complications
Results to date
- Approx. 11,700 doctors, nurses and health officials from more than 50 cities all over China have been trained, using the 'National Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Guideline' developed by the project.
- A total of 9 hospital sites or community health centres have either piloted, launched or continue to work with the integrated model to manage diabetes systematically, ensuring referral procedures for screening of patients.
