You help us put diabetes on the global agenda

In 2007 we will celebrate our five year anniversary; we are privileged to have got the opportunity to work with so many committed people around the world, who are all deeply concerned about diabetes.

At the World Diabetes Foundation, every day we strive to bring diabetes higher on the global agenda through advocacy and supporting actions of relevant stakeholders in the areas of health, and development assistance. Through our partnerships we aim to help build a global alliance to raise awareness of the diabetes epidemic, its negative consequences on people’s lives and raise a warning flag against the health and economic consequences of inaction, to individuals, communities and countries. It is our hope that by better awareness, resources will be found to stem the underlying risk factors, as well as for the urgently needed access to care for non communicable chronic diseases such as diabetes in the developing countries.

The Global Diabetes Walk on World Diabetes day is one of our global activities that helps create awareness and promotes knowledge and advocacy about diabetes. Volunteers from all over the world devote their time and energy to raise awareness about the struggle that people with diabetes have to go through in their daily lives; especially in the developing world, where very little attention is paid to non communicable diseases such as diabetes. Without their support there would not have been a Global Diabetes Walk.

We see health promotion and advocacy as important cornerstones in our effort to prevent type 2 diabetes to ensure better access to diabetes care for all people with diabetes in the developing countries. To date we have supported 94 projects, these projects happen because of the champions, who run these projects locally in their communities as well as on a national, regional and global level and we thank them for their initiative and dedication. These projects also happen because of the generous funding we receive from Novo Nordisk A/S as well as other donors and project partners. Fundraising by dedicated people both within and outside Novo Nordisk A/S secure additional support for specific project initiatives. So far 14 projects have received financial support from fundraising activities.

On behalf of the project beneficiaries, the Board of Directors and staff of the World Diabetes Foundation, I wish to thank you all for your friendship, support, collaboration and encouragement and take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New year!
